Welcome to Paradise City -  The city of Rock
Rock
is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It is characterized by a strong backbeat, a focus on the electric guitar, and a lineup typically consisting of bass, drums, and vocals.

While it evolved from rhythm and blues, country, and folk, rock is defined by its energetic performance style and often centers on themes of rebellion, social commentary, or personal expression.
Rock music has evolved into a vast "family tree" of subgenres, each defined by its own era, attitude, and sonic signature. While hundreds of micro-labels exist, these are the primary branches that shaped the genre's history.
The "Core" Branches
  • Classic Rock (1960s–1970s): The foundation of the rock era, characterized by guitar-driven melodies, anthemic choruses, and iconic frontmen.
    • Key Acts: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones.
  • Hard Rock & Heavy Metal (1970s–Present): Known for aggressive riffs, high-volume distortion, and powerful, often high-pitched vocals. While hard rock is more groove-oriented, heavy metal leans into darker themes and intense speed.
    • Key Acts: AC/DC (Hard Rock), Black Sabbath (Metal).
  • Punk Rock (Mid-1970s): A raw, fast, and anti-establishment reaction to the perceived excess of mainstream rock. It prioritized energy and DIY spirit over technical polish.
    • Key Acts: The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash.

Experimental & Artistic Evolutions
  • Progressive Rock (Late 1960s–1970s): Often called "Prog," this style incorporates complex time signatures, classical influences, and long, conceptual album structures.
    • Key Acts: Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush.
  • Psychedelic Rock (1960s): Born from the counterculture movement, using "mind-expanding" sounds, trippy effects like reverb, and surreal lyrics.
    • Key Acts: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Doors.
  • Alternative & Indie Rock (1980s–Present): Emerging from the underground, these genres value "independent" expression and often reject commercial mainstream sounds.
    • Key Acts: R.E.M., The Smiths, Radiohead.

Modern & Fusion Eras
  • Grunge (Early 1990s): A subgenre of alternative rock that combined punk's grit with heavy metal's riffs, characterized by distorted guitars and themes of angst.
    • Key Acts: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.
  • Pop-Punk & Emo (2000s): Mixed the energy of punk with catchy, radio-friendly pop melodies (Pop-Punk) or deeply emotional, confessional lyrics (Emo).
    • Key Acts: Blink-182 (Pop-Punk), My Chemical Romance (Emo).
